I swear I thought Turku could fly…

So I got up bright and early and headed down to Turku on the 6:22 train. The idea was to spend the day in Turku and then hop on the ferry to Stockholm. As plans went, it was a pretty good one. I said good bye to Antti and Tiina and got aboard. I’m gonna miss them.  For as much as they complained about Vaasa being a small, boring village, I had an absolute blast there. Vaasa – Finnish Navy

The way my time in Europe has been going, I just roll with the adventures. If someone or something comes along and suggests something, unless there’s a reason, I go with it. With Tiina and Antti, they had several things they wanted to show and do so I put myself in their hands and let myself see a Vaasa I’m sure very few others get to see. Vaasa – There’s hot and then there’s HOT

My time in Vaasa started in Tampere, Finland’s 3rd or 4th largest (and fastest growing) city. It is a two hour train ride from Helsinki and I stepped onto the platform and immediately spotted Tiina. I was worried about that. I mean, I had spent just a couple of hours with Tiina and Antti and that was several days before, so I was nervous about recognition. I shouldn’t have been. I saw her, called her name (which I almost never pronounced exactly right) and then we met up with Antti, who was at the other end of the platform. Helsinki – a taste of culture

Friday in Helsinki… Both Tommy and Jennica are at work and then going to an Iron Maiden concert (it was sold out, months ago, in 17 minutes or I would have gone along – approximately 1% of the population of Finland had tickets) so I was pretty much on my own for the day. I figured I was in a world capitol, I might as well do a little exploring. First stop – The Money Museum! Continue reading “Helsinki – a taste of culture”

Vienna, Krakow, and the Very Late Bus

My last day in Vienna was fairly uneventful… this seems to be my pattern now. I got up, and Imbi and I went and dropped my bag off at the bus station before grabbing breakfast (well…trying to find breakfast was an issue and we finally just settled for Starbucks where we could get free wifi). She tried to talk to her mum and dad and sis on skype on my computer but it was too Continue reading “Vienna, Krakow, and the Very Late Bus”

Like a Ray Bradbury story…

Day two in Zagreb was slightly confusing, since I kept thinking it was day three. The overnight trains, while good for saving money on lodging, play havoc with your sense of time in a place. As it was I got out of the house late and headed down to the town center. I went into the visitor information center, found out there’s only one tour in town and it leaves at 10am every morning. Old Things to take pictures of…

What a day! This was probably the best day I’ve had so far, mostly because of the company. Last night I met these two other travelers – Jenni and Jim. Jim is a rock singer from England and Jenni is an agro-economy major from Finland. We ran into each other in the lobby of the hotel and struck up a conversation. On the move…

Okay, not yet, exactly, but there is a plan. I have booked for three nights in a hostel in Berlin starting Saturday. I’m going to take the bus down from Copenhagen Friday night.

A couple if interesting things I’ve noticed here. One, I have yet to have meatballs. You’d think traditional Swedish fare would somewhere include meatballs, but no. Continue reading “On the move…”

Day one… in brief

So… My plane took off on time at 11:30am and thankfully I was on board. Not that there was any danger, really, but nonetheless, I was safely ensconced in my seat as we left Vegas for the wilds of Minnesota (not the Wild of Minnesota, which would have also been cool). Minneapolis, from the air, is beautiful! It’s green and lush and full of interesting architecture Continue reading “Day one… in brief”
