Portugal and the World of Tomar… (12/6-12/11)

belem-tower-farWeek two started on Tuesday with a late start, for me. I was out of the house at 10am and decided to try one of the several Hop on/Hop off bus tours in order to get to the big sites easily. Unfortunately, we’re in the off-season so the bus schedule for the line I chose (and I admit, I just went with the first one I saw, and even then I thought it was a different line), the Grayline tours, which, truth be told, was kinda shitty. The busses were supposed to come every 20 minutes but every 30-45 minutes was more accurate and the ground staff (and the one driver when I tried to get on the wrong bus) were unfriendly and unhelpful. But I had paid for it, so I tried to take as much advantage of it as I could. I did do the full circuit on the two lines (out of four) I had paid for so I guess that was okay. Disappear

Just clowning around…Lisbon (11/28-12/5)

crazy-touristsAlmost two years ago, through a weird series of connections and circumstances, I ended up tech-ing a clown show called Aga-Boom, which was performing in the Vilnius Comedy festival. Long story short I became friends with the principles, Iryna and Dimitri (and Jesse, who is also in the show and with whom I have many mutual friends from many different facets of my life) and several weeks ago, they asked if I could tech their upcoming run in Lisbon, Portugal. On the plus side, I’d never been to Portugal, it was decent money, and I always love working in theatre. The down side was that it was a three-week gig at the end of the semester and with Monki only 4 1/2 months old I would miss her 5 month check up (this after missing her 1 month for a gig in Vegas) and three weeks is a long time away from family. Rest in peace, little friend…

img_1701“The thing about owning a pet is they don’t live as long as we do.”

Last week I wrote about the problems Laika was having and what the doctor had said. The follow-up, naturally, was a different doctor at the same clinic said something completely different. It’s like no one talked to each other, no one took notes, no one seemed to know what was going on.

As for Laika, he seemed to be doing okay. After that last post I got a lot of well-meaning texts and emails telling me it was hard but I would know when it was the right time to let him go, when his suffering outweighed my selfishness. Crossroads

Laika in a TieA couple of nights ago, Laika freaked out. He’d been kinda lethargic all day, then, about 9 at night, he jumped up and ran headlong for the door. This wasn’t an urgent, ‘I have to pee’ kind of run but more a ‘I need to get out of this place as quickly as possible’ situation. He was banging his head against the door and dribbling urine. So here’s the deal. I’m a university professor, and I think I’m a pretty good one. Most of my students like me, I like what I do, and in the end everyone learns something.
