TNBBC’s The Next Best Book Blog: The 2017 David Bowie Reading Challenge

Okay, I know I said I’m going to be doing the PopSugar book challenge, and I’m sticking to that, but then I came across this reading challenge and I just had to share it.

I don’t know how far I’ll get with this one, but I like it too much to not at least add it to my own personal reading challenges of the year. Once you take a look at the (admittedly huge) list, I’ve gone ahead and made a PDF of it for your very own tracking purposes. Let’s see how many songs you can get through – I’m gonna start with Ziggy Stardust and work my from there!

Rabbi Abraham Zacuto and the Astrolabe | David Magazine

If I happen to be traveling somewhere, he knows something about the history and sends me on an adventure to write a story for an upcoming issue. This time, I was in Portugal, so he sent me in search of Portuguese Jewish history. The result is at the link below. Enjoy!

1978/2017 Spider-Man Calendar Desktop Wallpapers – Andertoons Cartoon Blog

Mark Anderson, who is a great cartoonist and prime level geek, realizing the cyclical nature of calendars decided to scan his old superhero yearly markers for everyone to enjoy. This year, it’s the 1978 Amazing Spider-Man edition he’s gracing us with. In the past, it’s been the 20th anniversary of Marvel and DC Super Powers (and then there were the amazing superhero Valentine’s day cards). Anyway… enjoy. And when you get a chance, thank Mr. Anderson for what he’s doing!

2016 In the Rear View Mirror

2016

So we’ve finally reached the end of 2016 and are starting a whole new trip around the sun. I started writing a post about life and looking at things in retrospect, disseminating politics and personifying the year but honestly, who cares? There were some bad times (Like this and this) but there were also some amazing times (for instance there was this and this).  Continue reading “2016 In the Rear View Mirror”

Fishes and the Sea (12/12-12/18)

dsc_0852Starting Monday, we were on our own for two days. We had packed up the show after the Sunday performance since we were moving for two shows to another theatre in another city later in the week. The thing about being here was that we weren’t exactly tourists, since we were working, but we weren’t exactly locals, since we were just visiting. So after doing our sightseeing during the first two weeks, going out and doing a tour just didn’t seem like the thing to do. But then, for me, sitting at home wasn’t the thing to do, either. I did that on Monday while grading papers and writing my article. So I knew I had to do something different on Tuesday. Continue reading “Fishes and the Sea (12/12-12/18)”

ZEN PENCILS » 193. JACK KIRBY: Hero worship

Always a big fan of Zen Pencils, and this time he’s taken on the words of Jack “King” Kirby  (there’s a great YouTube documentary about him which starts here).

It’s a great place to get inspiration on a Sunday morning.

Just clowning around…Lisbon (11/28-12/5)

crazy-touristsAlmost two years ago, through a weird series of connections and circumstances, I ended up tech-ing a clown show called Aga-Boom, which was performing in the Vilnius Comedy festival. Long story short I became friends with the principles, Iryna and Dimitri (and Jesse, who is also in the show and with whom I have many mutual friends from many different facets of my life) and several weeks ago, they asked if I could tech their upcoming run in Lisbon, Portugal. On the plus side, I’d never been to Portugal, it was decent money, and I always love working in theatre. The down side was that it was a three-week gig at the end of the semester and with Monki only 4 1/2 months old I would miss her 5 month check up (this after missing her 1 month for a gig in Vegas) and three weeks is a long time away from family. Rest in peace, little friend…

img_1701“The thing about owning a pet is they don’t live as long as we do.”

Last week I wrote about the problems Laika was having and what the doctor had said. The follow-up, naturally, was a different doctor at the same clinic said something completely different. It’s like no one talked to each other, no one took notes, no one seemed to know what was going on.

As for Laika, he seemed to be doing okay. After that last post I got a lot of well-meaning texts and emails telling me it was hard but I would know when it was the right time to let him go, when his suffering outweighed my selfishness. But he seemed to be doing okay. Continue reading “Rest in peace, little friend…”

Crossroads

Laika in a TieA couple of nights ago, Laika freaked out. He’d been kinda lethargic all day, then, about 9 at night, he jumped up and ran headlong for the door. This wasn’t an urgent, ‘I have to pee’ kind of run but more a ‘I need to get out of this place as quickly as possible’ situation. He was banging his head against the door and dribbling urine. I was in my pajamas so I opened the apartment door and the door to the outside and he took off running. Continue reading “Crossroads”

Professor Felicia Campbell – UNLV’s longest-serving faculty member talks about her life in, out of classroom | Las Vegas Review-Journal

So here’s the deal. I’m a university professor, and I think I’m a pretty good one. Most of my students like me, I like what I do, and in the end everyone learns something.

I owe a huge chunk of that to this women here. So if you think I’m good at what I do, you should read this article and learn about the source!
