This is the life of a VDU Professor!
Because Dodgson’s photographic work was almost as cool as his imaginary worlds.

So about a month ago, I get out of the shower and take a look at my face. This isn’t all that unusual, most of us do it (take a look at our own faces, if you’re looking at my face that might be unusual). Anyway, I notice that while I’m in need of a shave, there’s a weird patch of… nothing, just under my right nostril (see picture).
Interesting, I think. I look like a 70s era cocaine fiend and jokingly ask Rasa, who isn’t so keen on my facial hair to begin with, if she’s been waking up in the middle of the night to shave a part of my face or apply depilatory cream? She denies it, rightly so, and don’t think about, shaving the rest of my face to match. Continue reading “A little word about Lithuanian office visits…”
So I’m signed up for NaNoWriMo, the annual “let’s slap down 50k words towards a novel in 30 days” insanity this year. My profile can be found here. Of course, I’m actually not a fan of the fest, I think it can actually do more harm than good, but I understand the concept and I’m signed up with a book idea ready to go.
Naturally, this is the exact moment when the day jobs decide to spring extra work and it’s the end of the semester so there’s lots of grading to get done and blah blah blah, excuses excuses.
In any event, I’m there. If you’re participating look me up and I’ll add you back. And hey, I’m an amazing cheerleader even if I’m not able to race alongside you.
Good luck!
you are missed

Is this eligible for a Hugo?
Either way, here’s my new fictional offering from the pages of David Magazine.
And check out the art from the amazing (and available) Warren Wucinich!
Lester Dent wrote pulp stories in the 30s and 40s, writing as much as 200,000 words in a month and known for creating the super-heroic Doc Savage. While writing so much, he came up with a “Master Fiction Plot,” reprinted below. Karen Woodward, on her blog (which I strongly recommend for writers), has a great write up on his formula and goes into detail on the various steps. Additionally, Michael Moorcock speaks highly of the formula and has adapted it to writing a full novel. Continue reading “Lester Dent and the Pulp Formula”

Just putting this here so I know where it is when I want to research for my own routines. I’m gonna start practicing soon, I swear!
Also, here’s an interesting link to Teller talking about trick exposure and the origin of Penn & Teller’s Clear Cups and Balls routine

We’d been in the country for two weeks and were just now making it to the ancestral homeland. This week was going to be different than the two previous weeks as now there was going to be a bit more visiting people rather than places. And we got a good start to this on Thursday morning. Wednesday morning started early since we knew we had a long day ahead of us. Of course, the hardest part was going to be simply getting out of town. By this point, we’d learnt to (kinda sorta) trust the googlemaps GPS system and it said surface streets were our best bet for getting out to Santa Monica and the PCH as quickly as possible. (this is the first of three parts and very long – just giving you fair warning)Last January, 2014, I was visiting the US for my niece Riley’s bat mitzvah. This was my second time returning to the motherland since I’d left and as with the time before, I took the opportunity to visit friends in LA and San Francisco. While I was in LA I met up with my good friend, brilliant actor and former roommate JR. A few weeks earlier, JR had gotten engaged to the beautiful and charming Natasha, whom I’d heard about but this trip was my first time meeting her. It was great! Then at one point, JR and I were just shooting the breeze and he said “Listen… If you say ‘no,’ I’m screwed because I don’t know who else fits so will you be my Best Man.” I man enough to admit there were tears and hugging and of course I said “yes!” Continue reading “Weddings and the West Coast – USA summer 2015 – Week 1”
