I understand that there are not enough women below the line, and the above the line roles aren’t as evenly distributed as the males. You have expressed social outrage.
Now what?
What are we supposed to do with this social outrage? How are “we” supposed to “do better”? I don’t run a studio or production company. And of all the things that I could be marching and protesting for, this isn’t high on the list.
Am I supposed to boycot all video content that doesn’t employ a woman DP? Is there even a list readily available of films, TV shows, and streaming content that employ women DP’s?
Just saying that this situation is unfair and “we have to do better”, then dropping the mic, is just that: dropping the mic. Kudos on expressing outrage. Now what?
You’re right. I don’t know what to do. But at least acknowledging there is a problem is a start. And sure, boycotting film companies which don’t hire diverse talent is one way to approach it. Even better would be to promote and encourage films with female directors and cinematographers, write letters and “vote with your wallet” to show positive feedback rather than negative reinforcement.
But the problem is I’m not sure anyone knows how to rectify it except to “do better” in their own work. Were I still in Hollywood, I would do my best. Here, I promote the diversity whenever and wherever I can.
“Go see this film, this film, and this TV series. Not only are they good films, but they have a strong female cast and awesome female DP’s!” That promotes diversity.
OK. Grumpy, so this is a rant.

“We have to do better” is just whining.
