While I’ve written about my various trips with Aga-Boom on here, my personal blog, before, this time I’m writing about the trips for someone else. My latest David Magazine piece, Clown Trip: Breaking the Language Barrier One Smile at a Time, takes the wider perspective and involves what it means to make people laugh without language.
10 Gorgeous Retro Board Games Based on Sci-Fi Classics
So lately, I’ve been backing games on Kickstarter (well, games and books). I’m not even sure why, since we don’t really play games at home at the moment. Sure, I’m hoping once we move into a bigger place, and actually have a table, that will change. Plus, I’m hoping that once Monki gets a little older she’ll want to play some games and we can have some family fun outside of the TV. Harlem Globetrotters
Sunday morning Feb 24, I got a message from a friend asking if we were doing anything that night. Seems he had some extra tickets to see the Harlem Globetrotters at Žalgiris Arena and would we like them. My first impulse was to decline. We had no one to watch Monki and I really didn’t want to go alone. But then Rasa and I talked about it and said “why not take her along?” So I accepted the tickets and we suddenly had plans for the evening. Continue reading “Harlem Globetrotters”
Drive past the cemetery, not into it.
This week was filled with a couple of firsts for us. The first first was that my friend Dove bought herself a new car and we took her old one off her hands. This is our first car as a family and it’s a pretty big deal for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it means Rasa gets to drive again. David Magazine – Books and Phones
Couple of pieces in the Jan/Feb 2019 issue of David – Mine is called Cellphone Confidential, about the problematic relationship we have with our cellphones and other hand held technology, while Rasa makes her journalism debut with Reading in the New Year, a list of some of the best books from 2018 and a look ahead at 2019.
Enjoy the read!
It’s been _____ days since our last accident
Well…we went 904 days without breaking the kid.
Today the counter resets.
Let me jump to the end here and say everything is fine, she’s okay (now), and there will be no lasting damage. With that said, today was a scary day.
This morning, Monki was running around, as she is wont to do. I had gone out to run an errand and had just come back home and Rasa was about to go out for an errand of her own and in that in-between time, the little one was running around and having a great time, laughing and yelling and hiding and being her normal self. 19 Ways To Stay Close To Long-Distance Friends

Living in a foreign country, one where few people speak your language (not just linguistically, but culturally as well) is not easy. It’s certainly led me to bouts of sadness and melancholy, and wishing I were closer to my friends back home. I’ve written about this before, I know, but now Buzzfeed has written a fun article which describes 19 Ways To Stay Close To Long-Distance Friends. Continue reading “19 Ways To Stay Close To Long-Distance Friends”

2018 Year in Review
Another one in the books…
Again, the year was marked with new and exciting things for all of us, including some new travel destinations and some interesting work things.
Mars Gets Its First Typeface, Equivalent To ‘Helvetica’ On Earth – DesignTAXI.com
The new typeface is “ideal for way-finding and UI in the Martian colony.” As a font geek, I love this. And I like the font itself. Now just thinking of something I could use it on.

Jaq’s Year in Books
Check out My 2018 Year in Books on Goodreads.
I didn’t do too bad this year. Originally, I had set my goal at 80 books, then upped it to 100. Eventually, I topped out at over 120.
Now here’s some interesting stats: Continue reading “Jaq’s Year in Books”
A Christmas Carol
Review: Bonfire by Krysten Ritter
Bonfire by Krysten Ritter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Yup.
Like most people, I came to this book through the auspices of Krysten Ritter, actor. Her performances in various TV shows have long since labeled me a fan. Add to that I like a good mystery novel and this seemed like something at least worth a try.
It was. And more. Continue reading “Review: Bonfire by Krysten Ritter”
My DAVID Years | David Magazine
Wow…100 issues go by so fast. With very few exceptions, my words appear in each and every issue, and in this latest one, I get to reflect on that journey. In My DAVID Years, I make reference to a number of pieces I’ve written over the years, most of which can be found either in the David Archives online or right here on this very blog.
Of course, I’d be completely remiss if I didn’t mention Monika, who not only provided a name for one of the pieces but who is often my table-mate while sitting at various coffee shops writing these things.
