Growing up, my passion for film, filmmaking, and science fiction was spurred, pretty much, by one magazine – Starlog. I used to get it all the time, especially if the cover was about a film/TV show I was either desperate to see or one I had seen and was obsessing over.
Today, I discovered the Starlog Archive online. Can’t wait for a break in my daily work so I can dive in and read some of the original thoughts on films long since sequalized, lionized, disregarded, and remade.
This just might be my next tattoo.

September 21-22, 2019, the dates of this year’s Comic Con Baltics, had been on my calendar since probably sometime in April, when I had been invited to come and meet the organizers to talk about the project which would become Generation Geek.

As a Ghost Rider fan, this is perfect!
As we discussed in Part One of “Revisiting Classic Comic Book Adverts” , comic books in the 1970’s and early 1980’s were an immense treasure trove of some of the greatest advertisements ever conceived by men. Men who were obviously on drugs. The ads in the middle of comic books were often times more entertaining than the actual story. Take for example, some of the ads in my copy of Ghost Rider #12 from June 1975.
Ghost Rider is a paranormal super anti-hero from the Marvel Universe who is an indestructible spirit of vengeance. He literally received his powers from the friggin’ Devil and then decided that being Satan’s errand boy sucked (no matter how many Mettalica records Lucifer bought for him). Ghost Rider’s pre-demonic possession identity; stunt motorcycle pretty boy Johnny Blaze reneged on the deal and turned to righting wrongs instead of ferrying souls off to Hell…

School starts next week. For me. For Monki, it starts the week after. Yup! She’s not only enrolled in kindergarten/preschool, but she also starts ballet classes on Monday the second of September. Now, those events will probably warrant a post of their own, but in the meantime, this is my last weekend before the semester starts and I have to knuckle down and get stuff done.

Remember a few weeks back, when I posted about setting goals and succeeding in running a virtual 5k? I’ve become a little bit obsessed about it now. Pretty much when I go to the gym (which I’m trying to do more regularly), that’s what I do, I run (jog, really) my 5k and then do ab crunches and lift a few weights and I’m out. Rasa’s mom’s birthday is August 4th. We decided that going up to Mažeikiai would be a nice weekend trip. Of course, since we were already going to be heading that way, we may as well go a little early and take Monki out for something fun. The beach was again considered, but the weather was being a bit prickly so instead, we opted for the Dinosaur Park, the signs for which we pass every time we head towards Klaipėda. For some reason, maybe it’s because I miss being visually creative or because I wanted to see some of these things in the world, who knows? But what’s happened is that I’ve come up with some products, thanks to some amazing designers, and made a little shop to sell them.
Now, this isn’t some plan to get rich or anything like that (yes, I do make a little bit, but really that’s just for Monki’s college fund) but more just for me to have some design fun and share things. So if you see something you like, pick it up. If there’s something you want, let me know.

Having a car has meant that we have many more options available to us. For instance, when we were going to bed on Friday night, Rasa turns to me and says “let’s go to the beach tomorrow. We can get up early, load up the car, and head out to the coast.” Well okay then! Let’s do this thing!

July 6
We got up later than expected, and even let the baby sleep longer in order to get everything packed. We didn’t buy that much stuff so it wasn’t a difficult process (and besides, Rasa is a wiz when it comes to packing). Finally, we had to wake up Monki and headed out to have our last breakfast. I sent the girls ahead while I put the bags into the left luggage – this way we could go to the park and not have to worry about our stuff. Even though there wasn’t a lot of people in line, for some reason they figured they could get the line to go faster if they had two people taking bags, so I handed my stuff off, got a claim check for each article I left, including the suitcase, Rasa and Monki’s backpacks, and our coats.
