Sharing passions and Star Wars Machete Order

Star-Wars-Dad_o_132957I’m thinking about kids. My own specifically. No, I’m not pregnant (nor is anyone I know in a biblical sense) but it’s come up recently and it’s something on my mind. I’m thinking about how we, as parents, share our passions with kids. I wrote about it recently for David Magazine and how I thought it was missing from modern society. A Widow onto the World (of the Avengers)

Thoughts for a Sunday MorningThis week I went and saw Avengers: Age of Ultron again and with a second viewing comes a second understanding of things. When you know how things play out ahead of time it’s easier to take in some of the subtler points. Additionally, I’ve been reading a lot about the various reactions to the film, the good and bad and everything in between (including the film’s writer/director quitting Twitter – which had nothing to do with reactions to the film but is going to go to my larger point). Now here’s what I’m thinking (and warning, there will be spoilers ahead): Continue reading “A Widow onto the World (of the Avengers)”

The Wolf’s Lair or The Further Adventures of Julia and The Brat

At the Wolf's LairYou gotta love it when a friend bails on ya. You have tentative plans, to meet for a coffee after work then she calls and says she can’t make it because she got a better offer. Fair enough. I understand that. No harm no foul. Of course, to make it up to she comes back with… “so, wanna go to Poland on Saturday and check out a place Hitler used to live?”

This is my relationship with Monika. She’s as good a friend as you can get, even if she does get better offers from time to time. She’s also a great traveling companion and our (mostly) day trips together, from Anykščiai to Tallinn to the one time we went to Finland just to ride roller coasters are all amazing fun – so when she says do you want to check out a place which can verifiably host a placard stating “Hitler Slept Here” who am I to say “no”? DAVID • Sense: Tears a Land Hath Shed

It’s May 1st… Spring has sprung and in a few weeks, Memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer will be here.

I know we’re going to do this when the day actually hits, but let’s start early and take a moment to remember the people who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend the rights of citizens.

This is a short piece of fiction I wrote to talk about not only those who have left, but also those who were left behind.

If you like it, please share.

Be Yourself, unless….

Thoughts for a Sunday MorningI know they’re jokes, but I recently had a weird, knee jerk reaction to those posts on social media saying “Be Yourself. Unless you can be Batman. Then always be Batman.” You can replace Batman with any number of other things, from pirates, to fairies, to unicorns to any of a multitude of other superheroes. I used to think these were funny.  Continue reading “Be Yourself, unless….”

Podcasting…?

Old Timey MicSo I’m thinking about podcasts.

These are the democratization of ideas and thoughts, right? Anyone who thinks they have something to say has an open platform in which to say it. This is the digital version of Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park. It doesn’t really matter if you’re right or wrong, no one is fact checking outside of their choice to listen or not.

Like a blog, a podcast can have a specific point of view… or not. It can be published (is that even the right verb?) on a regular schedule…or not. It can make money for the people putting it out… or not. Continue reading “Podcasting…?”

Learning

Thoughts for a Sunday MorningWhen I was younger (and maybe not so much younger) I tried to learn from everyone and everything around me. Tossed off comments by people who knew more than I did became like little nuggets of intellectual gold I would horde.

Lessons I was shown once, when it came to things I was interested in, would stay with me. These weren’t formal lessons, although I remember those as well. No, these were just bits of advice, tips and tricks, what the Internet today would call “Hacks.”  Continue reading “Learning”

Awards…

So yesterday I won an award. Was nominated for four.

I was voted by the student body at Vytautas Magnus University a likely candidate to be the funniest professor, the best orator, best foreign professor and best all around professor. I took home the prize for Best Foreign Professor. This time around the award was a large hourglass which takes about a half hour to cycle through. Last year was an engraved globe and the year before a sculpture for the desk. Third year in a row I’ve won this particular prize. Continue reading “Awards…”

David March 15DAVID • Think: Travel App-titude.

This month in David, I’m putting my vast knowledge of travel to the test when I give you my thoughts on some of the cool connection apps out there to cover all aspects of your trip.

In addition to my piece, there’s all sorts of great reads to be found between the covers.

Book Collecting

Bookshelf
My local library

So it appears I’ve become a book collector.

To be clear, I’ve always been a book accumulator. There’s never been a time in my life when I didn’t have shelves and shelves of books at my disposal. I learned to read in kindergarten in Albuquerque (a classroom of one, I had progressive parents) and was reading well beyond my age from the beginning. Continue reading “Book Collecting”
