I am a father as well as a world traveling, dog loving, scuba diving, book collecting, writer - currently residing somewhere in Eastern Europe. His words have been spoken by Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and Robin Hood, been read by David Copperfield, and criticized by his 7th grade English teacher. He'd like to thank the members of the Academy, although he doesn't know why. In his spare time, he's a university professor and a kick-ass uncle.
Here in Sunny Southern Cal there’s this thing that happens every springtime. It’s called the Renaissance Pleasure Faire (look for more commentary as it comes closer) and it’s all about a group of people who dress up in medieval outfits and sell homemade crafts. It’s sort of like a dark ages garage sale. But what you’ve got to be asking yourself is “what does this have to do with this month’s video review?” Am I right? Thought so. When I got to the office the other day, there was this video sitting in my “in” box. First, I was a little surprised I had an “in” box, then I looked at the video. On the cover, sticking to the shrink-wrap, was a white piece of paper telling me this was the film Retreads but because of stupid circumstances, it was now called Bikin’ Men. Continue reading “Retreads/Bikin’ Men”→
How many times has this happened to you: You start off by driving down a deserted two-lane highway in the middle of the night (so far this isn’t too unusual). Riding in the passenger seat next to you is this drop dead gorgeous blonde (again, I can relate). The two of you are on your way to Las Vegas to secretly get married against your parents wishes (c’mon, who hasn’t done this). Continue reading “Highway to Hell”→
Imagine what a perfect world it would be if you could get through Easyriders magazine without having to actually read it. I mean, really, the first thing most of us do is look at the pictures anyway, right? Who needs words?
Now, finally, we don’t have to read a single sentence in order to enjoy the full, rich texture and depth we have come to love in Easyriders Magazine. At last, we have Easyriders: The Video Magazine. Continue reading “Easy Riders Vol 1-10”→
Admit it. If you saw a film advertised as a story about a girl in the desert with her M-60 machine gun, you’d be at least a little intrigued. I know I was.
It all started when Guantanamo Bey, my riding partner, decided he wanted to fire some automatic weapons. We jumped on the bikes and headed for Vegas. I know, there are places here to shoot but Vegas is so much more fun (look for my guest spot in “On The Road”, it’ll tell you all about it). Continue reading “The Last Drop”→
I can’t believe I did it again. I saw the video and was compelled to bring it home. I know what I said, but I guess the marketing guys are doing their homework because I really wanted to see another film that had the word “riders” in the title. I could’ve killed myself. But here I was, popping in a tape called Space Riders and actually getting ready to enjoy it, before I even knew what was happening. Continue reading “Space Riders”→
I’ve been at this for a while now, at least a couple of years, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this film. Sure, I’ve been screening documentaries recently and I know how everybody wants me to get back to doing real movies (thanks for cards and letters) so I go to the video store and try to find something I know you will all appreciate. When I saw the box for this one, I thought I had it. Continue reading “The Hellcats”→
It finally happened. I was doing everything right, even wearing my helmet. And it wasn’t my fault. I know, you out there think good old Skids is just whining but if I hadn’t had Guantanamo Bey on the back of the bike, none of this would ever have happened. As it is, I had to go to traffic school. Continue reading “Traffic School”→
After last month somebody got the idea I liked to review documentaries, so they sent me another one. I decided I’d review it for the simple reason it saved me a trip to the video store. The mistake I made was in watching it early in the morning, when I was still tired. Hey, I didn’t know what it was yet. I didn’t find out it was a documentary until after I’d started it. It could have been another cheesy film like Nomad Riders (you remember that piece of cinematic vegetation?) and if it was I certainly did not want to be awake. How was I supposed to know this was something I had to pay attention to. Continue reading “Street Smarts”→
Hi. Remember a couple of months ago when I told you how good Street Smarts was? Guess what? Once is not enough and the producers of the original have now given us Street Smarts 2: The Advanced Course in Urban Survival. Continue reading “Street Smarts 2”→
Why is it that all biker films have to have the word ‘rider’ somewhere in the title?
All right, not all of them, but enough to make me think there’s some kind of conspiracy around. I just sat through eighty-two minutes of a film called Nomad Riders and I’m not sure why they were called nomads. I’m so confused. What is it? Did some market survey dweeb over at Vestron Pictures decide that if you call a film ‘Blank Riders’ or ‘Riders of the Blank’ that immediately all of us bikers would pick it up. I did. I’m not above saying I judge a film by its advertising, but no more! Continue reading “Nomad Riders”→
Okay, so I realize I’m writing for a paper based deep in the heart of the film industry but I sure never knew the extent to which That industry’d go to promote a film they’re proud of. I found out. And they sure have a reason for their cockiness. Continue reading “Chopper Chicks in Zombietown”→
I am the first one to admit that my tastes may not be for everybody but I am quite sure we can all agree on this one. Let me start from the beginning. The other day, about a week ago, I’m at the video store looking for a flick for this month’s Spoke piece and the guy who works there comes over with a tape in his hands. “Hey, Skids,” he says, “I think you should check this one out.” Continue reading “Wild Riders”→
My opinion is that if you’re going to see a movie, you may as well see one you can identify with, right? So I’m looking through the paper and all that’s showing is this ‘feel-good’ crap that seems to be so damn popular these days. I hate going out, handing over my hard earned dough to some pimply face teenager so I can sit for two hours in a dark room and watch a bunch of fuckin’ yuppies whine about how miserable their lives are against a background of new age synthesizer drivel. I mean where’s Dennis Hopper when you want to see a great flick about real people who are just like me. When I spend my cash, I want to see action, girls, bikes, explosions, guns and more bikes. Like I said, all I want is something I can identify with, is that so much to ask. Continue reading “Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man”→
